It is one of the four percussion instruments along with kkwaenggwari, janggo, and buk. It has a long history.
It is a large gong and is also called "geum", "geum-jing", and "dae-geum".
It is widely used in daechita, muak, and nongak. It is used as an indicator of the first beat of each jangdan (rhythm). It is struck while being held in one hand, or it is hit while lying down or while being put on the knee. The mallet wrapped with cloth produces deep and soft sounds with long lingering sounds.
Currently, it is widely used in chita, Buddhist music, royal ancestral ritual music, shaman music, and nongak (farmers band music). The jing is called "daegeum" when it is used in royal ancestral rituals.
